On May 2, 2025, Minister Counselor Liu Xiaoguang of the Chinese Embassy in Ethiopia attended the Project Launching Ceremony of Capacity Building to Upgrade the Livestock Value Chain in Ethiopia (Phase II). Dr. Alemayehu Mekonnen, Senior Advisor of the State Minister for Livestock & Fisheries Recourses Development Sector of the Ministry of Agriculture, H.E. Ambassador Diriba Kuma, Director General of the Ethiopian Agricultural Authority, and Mr. Asegid Adane Mebratu, Deputy UNIDO Representative of the Sub-regional Office, attended the event.
Minister Counselor Liu said in his speech that this project will further deepen the practical cooperation among China, Ethiopia and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, and become a practical model for South-South cooperation to practice multilateralism, help enhance inclusiveness and promote sustainable development. China is willing to work with Ethiopia and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization to help Ethiopia improve the livestock value chain, enhance the competitiveness of Ethiopian meat products in the international market, and make greater contributions to Ethiopia's economic development and people's well-being. Ethiopia and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization sincerely thank China for its support for the transformation and upgrading of Ethiopia's livestock value chain, and are willing to work with China to implement the consensus of the meeting between the leaders of China and Ethiopia, deepen the trilateral partnership, and promote the sustainable development of Ethiopia's livestock industry through capacity building.
The project is part of the China-Africa (Ethiopia)-United Nations (UNIDO) Cooperation Demonstration Center Project, which aims to strengthen the livestock value chain in Ethiopia and promote technical cooperation and capacity building. The project is funded by the Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund, and is jointly implemented by China, Ethiopia and UNIDO, benefiting more than 17,000 Ethiopians.
